Core Convictions: Paul Ryan & Obama's Five Facts
This Saturday in front of a backdrop of the USS Wisconsin in Virginia, Mitt Romney introduced seven-term Wisconsin representative Paul Ryan as his choice for Vice President. Ryan, who has a well-deserved reputation as a conservative powerhouse and Congressional leader, addressed the American public from Norfolk, Virginia. The crowd of supporters greeted Ryan with energized chants of “USA!” and countless billowing American flags. Many Americans were pleased with Mitt Romney’s selection and feel that Paul Ryan is an excellent choice for the GOP ticket.
But the Obama administration, not wanting to miss an opportunity to diminish Ryan’s favorable press coverage and the ensued enthusiasm, responded to the news within hours. On a webpage entitled “Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan: The Go Back Team”, the administration lists five “facts” about Paul Ryan’s record. The first statement on the website reads “Paul Ryan’s top-down budget plan is a sham”. This is then elaborated upon, stating that Ryan and Romney support trillions in tax cuts for the rich and deep budget cuts.
Indeed, the Romney-Ryan team has made it clear that they certainly support these cuts—the likes of which will reduce the size of our out-of-control federal government and lower our national debt. The outline then articulates that “Paul Ryan’s plan would end Medicare as we know it”. If the Romney-Ryan team wins the election in November, the inefficiently government-regulated Medicare program would absolutely be altered. Paul Ryan favors repealing Obamacare, reducing the bureaucracy associated with the program, and empowering America’s senior citizens with the choice and control over their health care that they deserve.
Finally, as the last “fact” of the text, President Obama’s website declares that Paul Ryan is “severely conservative” and “out of touch with most Americans’ values”. Although the first implication of this remark may be true—Ryan is indeed a leader of the conservative movement—it is the second allegation that should be questioned. Do most Americans’ values include a desire for America to become a nation of secrecy, hypocrisy, progressivism, and government takeover?
The family, neighbors, friends, enterprisers, and proud citizens around us would argue that this could not be farther from the truth. America’s values were carved out of an ambition for small government and freedom from repression and tyranny. Our forefathers wanted three things for this fledgling country: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Right now, we don’t need partisan bickering or empty ideas. We need solutions to get us back on track for a sustainable future and a meaningful present-day. As Paul Ryan affirmed in his acceptance speech, “…real solutions can be delivered, but it will take leadership and the courage to tell you the truth”. America, do we have the courage to be truthful with ourselves over what is happening to this great nation?
